Driven element phased out of production

Posted on February 26th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

In a mutually coupled antenna array (notably a Yagi-Uda antenna), the driven element is the single antenna that has an applied source feed. The other antenna elements are not excited (or driven). There are a few reasons why one would only drive one element of the array. Doing this in the manner of a Yagi-Uda array allows for the field patterns to be directed in one direction with increased gain. The other elements are parasitic and take advantage of mutual coupling to aim the antenna.

In a log periodic dipole array (LPDA), only one of the many dipoles is driven at a time. The dipole that is driven depends on the frequency of the signal. The advantage of this over an antenna such as a Yagi, which is only designed for one frequency, is that the antenna can be made relatively broadband (nearly 2:1), by exciting differently sized elements that are resonant at different frequencies.

Notes

When a “driven element” is referred to in an antenna array, it is assumed that other elements are not driven (i.e. parasitic, passive) and that the array is tightly coupled (spacing far below a wavelength). It is also possible to have multiple driven elements in an array.

  • For example, a two-element array with the elements spaced a quarter wavelength apart has a distinct cardioid radiation pattern when the second element is driven with a source -90° out of phase relative to the first element (see also phased array).

Exerlopers boots

Posted on February 26th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Exerlopers are an unusual-looking exercise boot equipped with a half-moon-shaped spring attached to the sole. The boots were invented by Montreal’s Gregory Lekhtman in 1985, and offer wearers the ability to run on hard surfaces with little impact on knees and other joints. Users run in a bounding, loping, style which proponents consider a mobile alternative to other low-impact aerobic exercises, such as stair-climbing and the mini-trampoline.[1]

Lekhtman has constantly tinkered with the Exerlopers and the newest incarnation takes the form of a lace-up shell made of a durable plastic moulding.

Exerlopers have had at least one celebrity proponent. Lekhtman’s then-girlfriend Kim Campbell, Prime Minister of Canada in 1993, frequently exercised in the Exerlopers during her time as Prime Minister.

Cooper was a brand of off-road motorcycles made in Mexico using engine parts made in Italy and later, engines made by Sachs. Imported into the United States in the early 1970’s by Frank Cooper and sold as Cooper. Frank Cooper was a dealer for Maico when he contracted with Mexican motorcycle company, Islo to produce an Enduro and also a motocross model.

Islo also made a trials bike from 1971 - 1975 called GRM (Grapevine Racing Motors) that was imported to the USA, for Bill Grapevine, who designed the bike. Islo also supplied the engines for California’s Jones Motorsports who had the AMMEX motorcycle franchise. The Islo manufacturing facilities and name were bought by Honda around 1982

XFA forms

Posted on February 21st, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

XFA stands for XML Forms Architecture, a family of XML specifications that was suggested and developed by JetForm to enhance the processing of web forms.

XFA’s main extension to XML are computationally active tags<ref>From E-forms to Xforms (accessed August 14, 2006)</ref>. In addition, all instances created from a given XFA form template keep the specification of data capture, rendering, and manipulation rules from the original. Another major advantage of XFA is that its data format allows compatibility with other systems, and with changes to other technology, applications and technology standards.

According to JetForm’s submission to the World Wide Web Consortium, “XFA addresses the needs of organizations to securely capture, present, move, process, output and print information associated with electronic forms.”<ref>W3C Submission (accessed August 14, 2006)</ref> The XFA proposal was submitted to the W3C in May 1999.

In 2002, the JetForm Corporation was acquired by Adobe Systems, and the latter introduced XFA forms with PDF 1.5 and the subsequent Acrobat releases (6 and 7) in 2003.<ref>A Quick Introduction to Acrobat Forms Technology (PDF format)</ref>

XFA forms are saved internally in PDF files or as .XDP files which can be opened in Adobe’s LiveCycle Designer software.
