Internal bleeding internal

Posted on October 28th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Internal bleeding is bleeding occurring inside the body.

Contents

Causes

It may be caused by high blood pressure (by causing blood vessel rupture) or other forms of injury, especially high speed deceleration occurring during an automobile accident, which can cause organ rupture. Also, internal bleeding can be caused by hitting or running against a sharp object in that area. Some diseases may also cause internal bleeding, such as the Filovirus Ebola. This infection, together with similar infections such as the Marburg virus, is fortunately rare.
The most common cause of internal bleeding is carcinoma (cancer), either of the gastro-intestinal tract or of the lung, or more rarely of other organs such as the prostate, pancreas or kidney. Peptic ulceration and non-malignant inflammatory conditions of the colon (large bowel) remain, at least in the high-stress environment of Western Society, significant and indeed increasingly common conditions.

Prognosis

Depending on where it occurs (e.g. brain, stomach, lungs), internal bleeding can be a serious medical emergency, potentially causing death if not given a proper treatment quickly.

Internal bleeding can be serious for two reasons:

  • the blood can compress organs and cause their dysfunction (as can occur in haematoma)
  • when it does not stop spontaneously, the loss of blood will cause hemorrhagic shock, which can lead to brain damage and death.

Terminology

Internal bleedings are usually called hemorrhage, even though the term is general to all kinds of bleedings. A hemorrhage can occur near the colon due to large bowel movements.

A minor case of internal bleeding is ecchymosis (a bruise): blood expands under the skin, causing discoloration.

Diagnosis

Medical investigation is necessary to identify internal bleeding. The external signs are general signs of hypovolemic shock (see the article about shock for more information).

Gravity boots boots

Posted on October 27th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Gravity boots, while shaped like and worn like a boot, do not serve the same function as the footwear. They are ankle supports designed to allow a person to hang upside down. Thanks to exposure in television dramas and movies in the 1980s, gravity boots became a common fitness tool in homes across the United States.

Today, gravity boots are used by the U.S. Army and have experienced a surge in popularity in 2006 with Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown praising them as well. Several companies manufacture and market gravity boots under various trade names.

The purported benefits of gravity boots range from the relief of back pain and headaches to increased oxygen flow to the brain. Some people use gravity boots to add an extra challenge to workouts, doing inverted crunches or squats, while others such as Uri Geller [1] and Dan Brown use them as tools to help them generate new ideas.

Cribbage Square Solitaire and an electric starter.

Posted on October 25th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Cribbage Square Solitaire (also known as Cribbage Squares is a solitaire card game which can be played using a deck of playing cards. This game works the same way as Poker Square, but cribbage hands are used in this game. Up to seventeen cards can be used in this game.

First, sixteen cards are dealt one at a time in a 4×4 grid, provided that card must touch horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to any of those already in the grid. However, once a card is placed on the grid, it cannot be moved. After these sixteen cards are put into place, a seventeenth card, the starter, is turned face-up.

Points are scored according to how the hands formed horizontally or veritcally are combined with the starter. Horizontally and vertically in this case means that each row and column in the grid is scored as cribbage hand.

Hands are scored like in actual cribbage and the combinations below may occur more than once in just one hand:

  • Fifteens - Given that face cards are valued at ten and aces at one, a combination of two or more cards that add up to fifteen are scored two points each “fifteen.”
  • Pairs - each pair in a hand is scored two points each pair. A pair royal, or three of a kind, scores six points since three cards of the same rank can form three pairs, while a double pair royal, or four of a kind, scores twelve points since four cards of the same rank can form six pairs.
  • Runs - Three or more consecutive cards (regardless of suit) is scored three to five points depending on the number of cards on that run.
  • Flush - If the four cards on the hand is of the same suit, it is scored four points, plus an additional point if the starter is of the very same suit as those in the hand.
  • His Nobs - A jack in “his nobs,” i.e. one that has the same suit as the starter, scores a point.
  • His Heels - A jack in “his heels,” i.e. one that is the starter gives two points to the entire tally for the deal.

The object of this game is to reach the highest score possible using the sixteen cards. According to The Complete Book of Solitaire and Patience Games, the player is considered to “win” if the total score is at least 61.
