BootSkin boot

Posted on November 25th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

BootSkin is a computer program for Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista that allows users to change the screen displayed while the operating system is booting. It is made by Stardock, and distributed for free under the WinCustomize brand.

BootSkin uses a boot-time device driver (vidstub.sys) to access the display directly using VESA BIOS Extensions (VBE), unlike other bootscreen changers which alter the image of the boot screen inside the kernel. This has the advantage of not modifying system files, and makes higher-resolution boot screens possible; standard boot screens are limited to 640×480 with 16 colors. Unfortunately, some graphics cards and chipsets do not have good support for VBE, preventing their use with BootSkin.

Due to the severe restrictions on colour depth, many images are not suitable for use as boot skins. Successful skins tend to take advantage of the limitations through the use of a limited palette and dithering techniques.

Dnepr (motorcycle) motorcycle engines before

Dnepr Днепр (Russian), or Dnipro Дніпро (Ukrainian), is the brand name of heavy motorcycles produced in Kiev, Ukraine. It has been in use since 1967.

Motorcycles have been produced in Kiev since 1946 at the Kiev Motorcycle Plant (Kievskiy Mototsikletniy Zavod, Киевский Мотоциклетниий Завод, KMZ, КМЗ). Initial production was of a 98cc 2-stroke model that was confiscated from the German firm Wanderer as reparations. The original design for KMZ heavy motorcycles, and their cousin the IMZ, is taken from the pre-WWII German BMW motorcycle R71, which the Soviet Union licensed in 1940. The plant and equipment needed to make the M-72 (the Soviet derivative of the BMW R71) was transferred from the Gorkiy Motorcycle Plant (Gorky Mototsikletniy Zavod, GMZ located in the city of Gorkiy (Nizhny Novgorod) in 1949. The first batch of M-72 motorcycles was produced in 1952 with the supply of 500 engines from IMZ. In 1958 KMZ replaced the plunger framed M72-N with the swingarm framed K-750. (This frame may have been modeled after the post 1955 BMW duplex frame). In 1964 KMZ introduced a military model, the MV-750 with a differential two-wheel drive to the sidecar wheel. In 1967, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, KMZ released their first OHV engine in the “Dnepr” K-650. Unlike the earlier sidevalve engines with their roller bearing crankshafts, this engine featured a sleeve bearing crankshaft as found in the WWII Zündapp KS750. The K-650 was superseded by model MT-9 650cc, which was available in both solo and sidecar models (often referred to as the best “Cossack” as it was reliable and had all the good features. The MT-10 was the first Soviet motorcycle to feature 12volt electrics.

The Dnepr is famous for its off-road capability. Armed services models equipped with sidecars had two-wheel drive and as much as fifteen centimetres (6 in) of ground clearance. The present engine is a 650cc OHV boxer twin. Modern models are sold with engines ranging from the factory standard 650 to 750 and 1000cc. Some models have been spotted sporting aftermarket 1000 Hatz diesel, BMW, and even VW car engines.

These motorcycles have featured in many films like Indiana Jones and used prominently in the movie Garden State, with Zach Braff.

Between 1973 and 1979 Dnepr was one of the makes marketed by Satra in the United Kingdom as Cossack motorcycles. <ref>“Russian Motorcycle UK History” at Russian Motorcycle Manuals (Retrieved 30 November 2006)</ref>

Since demise of U.S.S.R. the factory had fallen on very hard times. Production decreased to only remnants of former glory. All shops were closed, and machine tools were taken out of the city limits.

Foam Walker boot

Posted on November 24th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

The Foam Walker, also known as a Roboboot, is a product manufactured by AirCast which provides semi-pneumatic support for the foot and ankle to prevent motion and aid healing of bone fractures and edema. It was designed specifically for foot and ankle injuries and performs the same function as a standard orthopaedic walking cast, with the added benefits of customised adjustment and support, and capability for easy removal.

Contents

Design and Use

The boot is held together by three straps which can be adjusted for comfort. The shell of the boot is rigid plastic and protects the foot from external injury, while the foam lining provides support and immobilisation of the injured foot. Two foam-filled aircells behind the lining along the back of the boot provide support for the foot and can be inflated or deflated to a comfortable level through the use of a dual-tipped rubber bulb provided with the product. The instruction manual for the Foam Walker suggests a greater level of inflation when walking, for improved support, and a lesser level of inflation when sitting or lying down, for comfort. Inflation should be begun from the aircell on the inside of the leg first, and both sides should be inflated equally when the boot is in use.

When to Use

The Foam Walker is usually prescribed by a doctor after diagnosing a foot or ankle injury through the use of an X-ray, when partial weight can be borne by the injury without further damage. The most common conditions for which this product is intended are ankle sprains, ankle fractures, metatarsal fractures, and Lisfranc joint injuries.

Sizing Information

The Foam Walker is available in four sizes - small, medium, large and extra-large - based on a person’s shoe size.

Boot Size UK Shoe Size
Men’s Women’s
Small 4-7 5-8
Medium 7-10 8-11
Large 10-13 11-15
Extra-Large 14-19 15+

Special boots for wide feet are also available for each boot size.

Considerations

If the aircells are overinflated, the boot can create enough pressure to cut off circulation. For this reason, the boot should not be inflated to an uncomfortable level. The Foam Walker can be placed and adjusted by another person where someone’s physical mobility is limited, but it is not intended for use with persons incapable of communicating physical discomfort.

Set shot (Australian rules football) Kick

Posted on November 24th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

A Set shot in the Australian Football League (AFL) is a kick for goal taken in time on, in which the player can ’set’ himself, rather than have to quickly react during the play. A set shot occurs when a player has been awarded a free kick, or has taken a mark. There is always one opponent allowed to be “on the mark” (the place where the mark was taken), who can attempt to distract the kicker by gesticulation or verbal intimidation.

Custom motorcycle motorcycle

Posted on November 23rd, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

A custom motorcycle is a motorcycle that is highly stylized or which treats aspects such as frame geometry or engine design in an unusual way compared to standard manufacturing. Custom motorcycles are unique or individually produced in a very limited quantity, as opposed to “stock” bikes or “stockers,” which are mass produced. In the 1990s and early 2000s, very expensive customs such as those built by Orange County Choppers Jesse James’s West Coast Choppers or Cyril Huze [1] became fashionable status symbols. There are also companies that are bringing back pinstriping, such as Kenny Howard (also known as Von Dutch) from the 1950s with a continued effort to keep pinstriping alive with Von dutch kustom cycles. Some motorcycle enthusiasts feel that the only true customs are those built in a home garage by the person who will ride his or her own creation. The choppers of the 1960s and 1970s fit into this category.

Some motorcycle manufacturers, such as Harley-Davidson and Honda, include the word “custom” as part of a model name. If capitalized, “Custom” does not denote a custom motorcycle as described above; rather, it is part of the model name of a mass-produced motorcycle.

Sue Gerhardt increased

Posted on November 23rd, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Sue Gerhardt is a British psychoanalytic psychotherapist and the author of Why Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby’s Brain.

The book presents evidence that babies’ brains develop differently in the first few months of life depending on the amount and type of care they receive in that time. The evidence suggests that the pre-frontal cortex and, within that, the orbitofrontal area are stimulated and interconnect more powerfully when a child is demonstrably loved. The advantage of positive development is increased confidence and an ability to empathise with others. Neglect can lead to increased anxiety, insensitivity and aggression.

The findings have political implications, since the demand for parents to reduce the time they spend with their child because of work commitments leads to an increased emphasis on institutional child care.

There are also implications for gender politics as women are frequently expected to take on the burden of child care, rather than the father, and this developmental finding could be used to argue for a reduced role for women in the workplace.

Hollow body electric guitar electric

Posted on November 22nd, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

A hollow body electric guitar is an electric guitar with a hollow body in contrast to solid body electric guitars. This is not the same as an electric acoustic guitar, which is an acoustic guitar with the addition of pickups or other means of amplification, either added by the manufacturer or the player.

Hollow body electric guitars are further classified into arch-top and thinline guitars.

Generally, hollow body electric guitars are usually lighter than a solid body guitar of comparative size because its body mass is reduced as a result of the addition of sound chambers. However, they face problems in high-gain amplification, as the sound chambers also induces unsavory feedback.

A few of the most famous manufacturers include Gibson, D’Angelico, Gretsch, Epiphone, Rickenbacker and Ibanez.

There are many well-known hollow body electric guitars. a few examples would be:

  • The Gibson L5
  • The Gibson ES-335 actually semi-hollow electric guitar, similar in appearance to hollow body Gibson ES-330
  • The Ibanez Artcore Series Hollowbody guitar line
  • The Gretsch White Falcon Electric Guitar
  • The Rickenbacker 300 series
  • The Epiphone Les Paul Ultra model
